What is CMC Powder?

CMC stands for Carboxymethylcellulose and is added to fondant icing in order to make it easier to work and model with and makes it dry quicker. CMC is the partial sodium salt of a carboxymethylether of cellulose, the cellulose being obtained directly from natural strains of fibrous plant material.

CMC is used as a thickener in the food industry, as a drug carrier in the pharmaceutical industry, and as a binding agent and anti-resettling agent in the daily chemical industry. Used as sizing agent and protective colloid for printing paste in printing and dyeing industry. It can be used as a component of fracturing fluid in oil production in petrochemical industry. This product has the functions of adhesion, thickening, strengthening, emulsification, water retention and suspension.

Sodium carboxymethyl cellulose is an organic substance with the chemical formula [C6H7O2(OH)2OCH2COONa]n. It is a carboxymethylated derivative of cellulose and the most important ionic cellulose gum. Sodium carboxymethyl cellulose is usually an anionic polymer compound prepared by reacting natural cellulose with caustic alkali and monochloroacetic acid, with a molecular weight ranging from several thousand to one million. CMC-Na is white fibrous or granular powder, odorless, tasteless, hygroscopic, and easy to disperse in water to form a transparent colloidal solution.
